Dear Lexington Little League (LLL) Families,
We hope this email finds you safe and healthy during such difficult circumstances. We wanted to provide you with an update regarding the 2020 Spring Season. It was the hope of the LLL Board that the spring baseball and softball season would bring back a sense of normalcy to our community, players, coaches and volunteers. Unfortunately, due to the associated uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, we have determined that we must cancel the Spring 2020 LLL season. While this decision is very difficult, the health and safety of our players and their families is our top priority. Below is a summary of the current situation and hopeful next steps.
BACKGROUND FOR SPRING CANCELLATION
Governor Baker has extended school closures through the end of the school year and social distancing guidelines though at least May 18th. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) has cancelled the high school spring sports season. At a local level, our Town fields remain closed indefinitely and local in-person public events have been cancelled through the end of May. And just late last week, Little League International made the difficult and disappointing decision to cancel its World Series and Regional Tournaments for the first time in their 75-year history.
NEXT STEPS and FUTURE PROGRAMS
LLL will be communicating details around our spring program refund/credit options in the next couple of weeks. We acknowledge that many families are facing difficult and stressful times and understand that each family situation is unique. With this in mind, we will be thoughtfully preparing refund options for returning players, as well as those graduating players whose Little League experience has been cut short. Prior to making your decision, we ask you to kindly consider that LLL is a non-profit organization, our Board members are all volunteers, and the League has incurred certain expenses to prepare for 2020 season, including costs for:
Despite the uncertainty surrounding future programs, Lexington Little League remains committed to providing baseball and softball opportunities. We look forward to continuing our programs and investment in our players and community when it is safe to do so. The League is re-evaluating its summer programs based on public health and safety status updates, field availability and direction from leagues that coordinate these summer travel programs (Bay State and Middlesex for baseball and Middlessex/Liberty for softball). We will communicate more to LLL families in the coming weeks as we learn more about these potential summer programs.
Thank you to our baseball & softball community for your patience, continued support and dedication toward our program during these uncertain times.
